During this week, the University of West Florida’s Gay Straight Alliance is having Spring Pride. This is the first time UWF has seen a pride event, and it is sure to be a celebration to remember. President of UWF’s GSA Ilan Cosmas said the idea for a pride week was brought up by a student from the Graduate Student Social Work Organization.
“There aren’t a lot of LGBTQ events on campus, and since Pride happens near the summer, we wanted to have one here during the spring semester,” Cosmas said. “We wanted to have a week filled with events where people could learn about and interact with Pride and the LGBTQ community.”
The week is designed to be a mix of educational and celebratory events. Tuesday will be about the history of pride display, Wednesday night will serve as a free movie night showing “Love, Simon.” On Thursday from 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. there will be a forum on why LGBTQ voices matter at UWF will take place in the Commons, room 255.
Rounding off the week is a carnival held on Friday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the Canon Greens.
“I decided to use the movie night as a fundraising night for LGBTQ organizations like STRIVE,” Cosmas said. “We chose this week because it’s the week directly after spring break as we felt it would be a good way to start off the rest of the semester.”
